Tips for you to conserve water while having a beautiful, green lawn. Our society is increasingly concerned about water. For many homeowners, a lush green lawn is a symbol of pride and a pleasant place to relax or play. But maintaining a green lawn will require a lot of water, and depending on where you live, there may be water restrictions or simply low water levels for much of the year. No matter where you live, it’s important to learn ways to conserve as much water as possible. Learning how to efficiently water your lawn will help save you money and preserve this precious natural resource. Can a lawn be smart in how it uses water? The following are 4 ways to conserve water as you water your lawn…
Feed the Lawn With Nutrients
It is one of the key lawn care jobs as grass needs a continuous supply of nutrients in the right balances to enable growth and development. In fact, a lawns needs can be directly compared to our own nourishment requirements in the fact that both humans and grass need a ‘well balanced diet’ that provide the essentials required to sustain a healthy life form that not only stays in good shape but is also resistant to disease and other forms of stress. A well-fed lawn grows deeper roots to better absorb water and nutrients. Compared to an underfed lawn , a lawn that is fed uses water more efficiently.
Make Sure Grass Is Cut At The Right Lawnmower Height
Grass mowed at the proper height and not scalped, develops a deeper root system to better find water and nutrients in the soil. Using the same pattern to mow your lawn can also cause stress to the grass from the repeated wheel tracks that follow the same direction week after week. Try changing the direction you mow in every time you cut the grass. It will help cut down on stress to the lawn, and may also prevent divots from forming in your pattern. Set your mower’s wheels to the proper height. There is some variance of recommended heights depending on the type of grass in your yard. Most lawns prefer your mower set to one the highest setting, providing a 3-4 inch cut.
Leave the Grass Clippings On Your Lawn
A good way is to mow with a mulching mower. Mulching grass clippings chop them up finely enough that they cause no harm to the lawn. Plus they add nutrients to the lawn. But regardless of the type of mower that you own, you should not be mowing when the grass is wet. Mow often so too much of the grass blade isn’t removed at once. Removing too much of the grass blade shocks the grass and leaves clipping pills on the lawn that can smother the grass.
Rely On Rain
Each lawn will have its own ideal amount of water necessary for its grass to grow and thrive. This amount depends on factors like the kind of grass growing, soil composition, climate, and so on. Mother Nature usually provides enough water through rainfall for grass to grow strong. If you choose to water beyond that, wait until the lawn becomes dull green in color. You can also check your lawn by walking on it. If your footprints don’t disappear quickly, it’s because the grass blades don’t have the needed moisture to spring back. During hot, dry spells or short periods of drought, you can let your lawn naturally turn brown and go dormant. Lawns are amazingly resilient and can tolerate drought conditions for up to 2 months if left alone. The grass will bounce back when rainfall and cooler temperatures return, especially if it has been well fed.
If You Feel the Need to Water Your Lawn…
Install smart watering devices. That utilize all-time weather, plant, and soil data. Using smart watering devices cuts down on wasted water by applying it only when the lawn needs it. Smart sprinkler systems are designed to lower your water bills without wildly impacting your electricity bill, make your life easier, and save your joints all the stress of watering the lawn for yourself. Beyond that, they’re a lot better at providing thorough results without wasting water.
