Why is Fertilizer Beneficial
There are three essential nutrients plants need to grow. Number one is nitrogen which keeps plants green and assists in plant productivity. Number two is phosphorus which helps convert sunlight and other nutrients into food. And number three is potassium often called potash which helps plants use water and resist drought. It grows healthy lawns by promoting green sturdy stems on deep roots.
Organic Versus Chemical Fertilizer
Both have their own benefits and concerns.
- Organic: What is the advantage of using organic fertilizer? Organic fertilizers improve the soil. Organic materials and fertilizers improve the soil texture, allowing it to hold water longer and increase the bacterial and fungal activity in the soil. So, they not only assist your plants, but they also help the soil. The disadvantages of organic fertilizer are that fresh, non-composted manure can damage your plants, because some manure contains harmful amounts of salts. They can also be a source of weed seeds and organic fertilizer takes longer to work.
- Chemical: The chemical fertilizer can be used in poor soil to make it fertile immediately. They add a sufficient amount of nutrients needed by the plant. They contain the three essential nutrients (NPK) needed for plant growth. They are cheaper than organic fertilizers and easy to use. The disadvantages of chemical fertilizers are they provide minerals which dissolve in water and soon after these are available to plants, but they may not remain in the soil for long. They may escape from the soil and pollute ground water, lakes, and rivers. The continuous use of chemical fertilizers has led to degradation of soil health.
Fertilization is key for a healthy, thriving lawn, but it can take a lot of work and expertise. Consider hiring a professional lawn fertilizer service to get a gorgeous, healthy lawn.
