Look at your lawn space and think of it as a canvas. Let your ideas be unconventional. Landscape designers work on a canvas that is distinctly different from other art forms. For nearly two centuries the lawn has been a standard fixture in the American Landscape. However the interesting thing about a “lawn” is it is neither native nor sustainable. Lawn care takes lots of time and energy. So how can you design a lawn space into your landscape without all the negative aspects? The following are 3 things you can incorporate into your the lawn so that’s it’s attractive, unique, and sustainable…
Make Your Lawn Just One Element of Several in Your Landscape
By breaking up the big rectangular lawn with interesting plant beds and other features such as similarly sized shrub and flower beds will compliment the open green space. Design the beds to push into the lawn area, reducing the amount of high maintenance grass area and adding shape, texture, color and depth to your landscape. Something wonderful happens—your lawn actually looks bigger.
Add Curves and Shape to Your Landscaping
Adding movement to your planting beds is a way to invite the eye to follow along and explore various aspects and areas of your property. Replace that large rectangle boxy, straight edged lawn area with flowing borders that integrate and harmonize with a reduced lawn area. This will make your landscape canvas more interesting and beautiful and also more sustainable.
A Field of Green Can Be More Than Turf Grasses
Have a larger yard or tough to cut areas? Maybe you would be better off have a mix of turfgrass in some areas and wild flowers in others. Maybe other not so labor intensive ground covers should be used in areas that aren’t as close to your home and not used as often. Some landscape designs are using lilyturf, sedge, mondo grass, moss, clover, and dwarf myrtle to great effect.
