Trees are an important part of any landscape. Not only are they beautiful, they provide shade, cleaner air and an increase in property value. You’ve done your homework by assessing your yard and using the information to choose the right trees for the situation. You plant them in the proper way and work hard to water, prune, and fertilize them as needed. Even with the best of care, though, trees can still become sick. Here are some things to look for when assessing whether your tree is healthy…
Signs of a Healthy Tree
- No Dead or Broken Branches – A healthy tree has an absence of dead or broken branches. Prune away dead and broken branches as soon as you see them, as these are a common way for insects and diseases to enter the tree. Snap off a branch, living twigs bend and dead twigs break. Living branches will show green underneath.
- Evidence of Yearly Growth – Trees should produce new growth every year. Check the amount of growth by measuring the distance between this years’s and last. The average growth varies by tree, so check to see what you should expect.
- Healthy Leaves – Leaves or needles in the case of evergreen trees, should be abundant and have the proper color, shape and size according to the season. When a tree is stressed, a common sign is wilting. The leaves and stems will lose their rigidness and begin to droop.
- Strong Trunk and Bark – With the exception of certain trees (such as some birches, eucalyptus, and maples), bark should not be loose or peeling. There should not be fungi growing on the trunk. Healthy trees have a center leader that keeps and maintains their strength and form make sure you have one leader trunk.
Signs of an Unhealthy Tree
- Abnormal leaf color or a change of color or loss of color
- Change in shape, swellings, cracked or split surface, distorted leaves and stems
- Growth disturbance, growth stimulation, stunted or reduced growth
- Disease evidence
- Die back, progressive death of shoots, leaves or roots, beginning at the tips
- Fungus growth
- Spots and lesions, leaf spot, blotches, scabs or pits
- Cavities, cracks and holes in the trunk or limbs
- Damage by animal and insect feeding, exit holes, webbing, internal or external shredding
