How To Handle Lawn Disease Like Yellow Patch…

Watch out for those yellow patches that can occur between late fall and early spring. If not treated early, it can spread all across your lawn.

What Causes Yellow Patch Disease

This is caused by fungi that live in the soil, thatch, and dead leaves. It feeds off of the grass by drawing all of its nutrients and killing the plant cells. It is spread by wind, air, water, and foot traffic. Typically, if an area has been prone to this in the past, it will likely occur every year. The disease is most common in late fall, winter, and early spring when the temperatures are much cooler. Affecting grasses such as Kentucky bluegrass, perennial ryegrass, tall fescue, Bermuda, and Zoysia, it makes an appearance in rings of patches on the turf that are yellow, light brown, or reddish-brown. Measuring 5 inches to several feet in diameter, the damage is superficial.

What Are The Reasons Yellow Patch Occurs?

There are many reasons this disease can invade your turf, including:

  • You receive more than 10 hours of leaf wetness for several days at a time
  • There is excess thatch which is a breeding place for fungi
  • Your lawn contains high nitrogen levels

How you mow your lawn also has a huge impact on how healthy your lawn is. If you are using a dull blade or cutting it too low, you are creating a more susceptible area for various diseases.

How Can I Control Yellow Patch?

  • Ensure you have the ideal amount of nitrogen by using a slow-release fertilizer.
  • Reduce grass wetness.
  • Regularly aerate to remove excess thatch which will help alleviate compaction and improve drainage.
  • Mow in the morning at a high level to allow grass blades time to heal.
