Your lawn is no different than all living things it is prone to disease. Humans catch viruses but your lawn is affected by fungus. Listed are several common lawn diseases…
- Brown patch
- Dollar spot
- Fairy ring
- Fusarium blight
- Necrotic ring spot
If you lawn becomes brown, yellow or filled with mushrooms one of these unique diseases is probably the culprit. Each disease has its own characteristic.
Gaining an Understanding of Lawn Disease
Weak Lawns and Fungus are the two things that cause lawn disease. If you mower has come in contact with any lawn fungus it is important not to use the mower on your lawn. However avoiding lawn fungus can be difficult. It is more important to avoid weak lawns. The following problems are a sure fire way to give yourself a weak lawn…
Compacted Soil
Compacted soil makes it difficult for roots to grow deeply. Rain and snow can lead to compacted soil. Children and pets that are often on the lawn can compact the soil. And even gravity can compact the soil. The solution is to aerate the soil so the lawn roots are able to expand.
Poor Watering
Over Watering, watering too often with less water, and not watering at all are watering problems. It is harder to remedy some of these issues during a drought, but proper watering is crucial for deep roots, that can prevent lawn disease. The best time of day to water is early morning. Water pressure is high, less water is lost to evaporation and your lawn has plenty of time to dry out before nightfall. Lawns that remain wet overnight are more susceptible to disease caused by moisture-loving mold and other fungi.
Mowing Wrong
Know the type of grass you have in your lawn and is ideal height. Different types of grass have different ideal heights. Make sure your mower blade is sharp. And do not cut more than one third its length at a time.
Poor Seeding
Overseeding is a great way to fight off weeds. One secret that lawn care experts have known for years is that your lawn can choke out disease and weeds when there is more grass than your lawn can handle.
Poor Fertilization
Dollar for dollar, fertilization does more to improve quality grass or to maintain good quality grass than any other practice. Proper fertilization practices produce a dense, medium to dark green turf that resists disease.
Non-Grass Thatch
If you have a thick layer of thatch, it can block the sun so that the grass has a difficult time growing. Thatch is a loose, intermingled organic layer of dead and living shoots, stems, and roots that develops between the zone of green vegetation and the soil surface. If you have thatch it creates an environment where the water is on the surface and does not reach the roots. You can perform late summer/early fall thatch removal in conjunction with renovation practices such as aeration, fertilization, and overseeding.
