There are several factors that contribute to a healthy, lush lawn. With a little insight, your yard is sure to be the envy of the block. While fertilizing your grass, installing an irrigation system, and preventing damage from pests and disease will help you achieve the lawn you want, one of the simplest ways is often the most overlooked. Proper lawn mowing practices can make a world of different for your lawn and the following are some tips on how to mow correctly…
Mow Lawn To the Right Height
You might be quick to set your blade low to avoid mowing frequently. However, mowing your grass too short can create stress and cause it to burn out. This also creates an optimal environment for weed growth. And cutting your grass too tall doesn’t look good. Mowing your lawn at a height of 3 ½ to 4 inches is ideal. You should also mow every 7 days. Regardless of the length, avoid cutting more than 1/3 of the grass height at a time. It is important to keep your mower blades sharp. If your lawn is a half acre or less, you should sharpen the blades every 3 months. Mowing with dull mower blades can make them more likely to become diseased or infested with hungry insects.
Have a Proper Mowing Pattern
Mowing your lawn the same way every time is not a good idea if you want greener grass. It is best to change your pattern each time you mow. Regardless of the type of mower you use, the wheels will leave tracks. Mowing the same pattern every time will cause the tracks to make noticeable wear in your lawn. Alternate your directions by mowing horizontal, vertical, or diagonal. Rotate two or more of these patterns to reduce signs of wear.
When To Spread and When to Bag Lawn Clippings
You might wonder how to dispose of your lawn clippings— should you bag, discharge, or use them as mulch? In most areas, bagging during the spring and fall is best. This decreases the amount of thatch and leaves which will make your yard look better. It does require more work as bagging and disposal will take some additional time but the results are worth it. During the Summer when your grass doesn’t grow as much, you can use grass clippings as organic mulch or discharge them about your yard. However, to still maintain a good looking lawn, you should spread the clippings out evenly. Doing this in the Spring can negatively impact the growth of a healthy lawn as your thatch might suffocate the health grass beneath. In the fall, too many clippings can delay new seed germination.
