Easy to Follow Tips on Watering Your Lawn For Optimal Lawn Health, Growth, and Beauty! See Videos…

Water is one of the most important requirements your lawn needs to grow and stay healthy. The following watering techniques and recommendations will help you keep a great and beautiful lawn and maximize the efficiency of the the water you use. It’s very important to adjust your watering practices throughout the season to compensate for changing weather, growing conditions, and the types of grass in your lawn. The amount of water your lawn requires will depend on these factors.

Follow These Recommendations for a Healthy and Beautiful Lawn

  • Apply 1 inch of water once per week (sandy soils may require more). This amount will increase during the summer months to accommodate for the increased amount of water evaporating out of the lawn. An easy way to figure out how much 1 inch is in your lawn specifically; Set out a tuna can, time how long it takes to fill that tuna can up halfway and that is how long you should water each section of your yard weekly.
  • Water your lawn in the early morning to help prevent disease. Avoid watering in the late evening because this can create prolonged periods of moisture that can increase disease problems.
  • Water your lawn deep and infrequently – Long watering will allow water to reach the entire root system 5-6 inches down. When you water lightly and frequently, the grass will absorb the water, but not encourage any further root development. This will reduce the grasses ability to resist the drought stress in the summer.
  • Avoid Overwatering your lawn. If you can see any pools of water in the lawn, this is creating that prolonged water exposure that diseases thrive in.
  • Schedule regular maintenance to your irrigation system if you have one. This will keep it distributing water effectively and consistently to all your lawn. Make sure you system is programmed correctly to maximize water efficiency. Most of the time, watering is pushed off due to it being seen as a hassle, but choosing the correct sprinkler system can significantly aid in making watering a seamless process.
