Mosquito Control Tips – How To Get Mosquitos Out of Your Yard…

treat mosquitoesMosquitoes carry serious diseases, like West Nile virus, and you don’t want them near your family or pets when you can prevent it. Mosquitoes also transmit valaria and expose dogs to heartworms. The following tips will help get your yard to a mosquito free zone with must a bit of preventative maintenance.

Standing Water Invites Mosquitoes

Make sure to get rid of all standing water in your yard. Mosquitoes first 3 stages of their life require water. Eliminate the water and they can’t reproduce in your yard. The tough part is that only a bottle cap full of water is enough water for mosquitoes to breed in. Some normal yard items like sandboxes, wagons, and plastics toys can hold water. Make sure your plant saucers, dog bowls, gutters, and the areas under your downspouts aren’t providing the mosquitoes a breeding ground.

Get Rid of Unneeded Vegetation

Mosquitoes love plant nectar found under leaves and on vegetation. They like to hide from the heat of the day in tall grass around shrubs and bushes. Get rid of their hiding spots spots by keeping your yard mowed and tidy. Make sure to weed eat after mowing.

Mosquito-Repelling Plants Can Help

Mosquitoes don’t like citronella. Citronella plants can be grown in pots in cooler climates like we have in Northern Kentucky. Mosquitoes also don’t like catnip, lavender, marigolds, basil, or peppermint.

Get Rid of Debris

Grass clippings, piles of leaves, stacked branches, and other types of unneeded debris attract mosquitoes and their breeding habits. Get rid of it all! Keep firewood stacked off the ground so there is good air flow between the wood to prevent mosquitos.

Professional Mosquito Control

Northern Kentucky Mosquito Control Professionals can provide a barrier spray treatment that will kill adult mosquitoes. They have larvicides that will kill the mosquito larvae. Mosquito control treatments are applied several times a year and before big events.

The barrier spray contains pyrethrin, which is a pesticide derived from dried chrysanthemum or pyrethroids which is a synthetically produced insecticide. Pyrethrin breaks down quickly when exposed to sunlight and moisture. The barrier spray chemicals are approved by the EPA because in their words they “do not pose risk concerns for children or adults.”

Larvicides are used in retention ponds, ditches, lakes and backyard ponds and the most common larvicide is BTI. Bacillus thuringiensis israelensis (BTI) is a naturally occurring bacterium and is nontoxic to mammals, fish and birds, according to the EPA.
