TOP DRESSING SERVICES
Top dressing is an important lawn care technique that involves applying a thin layer of material, typically a mixture of sand, soil, and organic matter, over an existing lawn. This service improves soil structure and promotes healthier grass growth by providing essential nutrients. Top dressing also aids in thatch decomposition, enhances drainage, and fosters a better environment for beneficial microorganisms. Professional top dressing services use specialized equipment to ensure even distribution of the material, minimizing disruption to the existing grass while maximizing the benefits to the lawn’s ecosystem.
Benefits of Top Dressing
- Improves Soil Health: Compost adds essential organic matter and nutrients to the soil, improving its structure and fertility. This encourages healthy root growth and overall lawn vitality.
- Enhances Aeration Effects: Aeration creates small holes in the soil, and when you apply compost afterward, it fills these holes, allowing nutrients and organic matter to penetrate deep into the soil where the roots can easily access them.
- Increases Water Retention: Compost improves the soil’s ability to retain moisture, reducing water runoff and helping your lawn stay hydrated for longer periods, especially during dry spells.
- Boosts Microbial Activity: Compost is rich in beneficial microorganisms that break down organic matter, helping to make nutrients more available to your lawn and promoting a healthier soil ecosystem.
- Reduces Thatch: Compost helps break down thatch (the layer of dead grass and roots), preventing it from building up and suffocating your lawn.
- Encourages Thicker Grass Growth: The nutrients and organic matter in compost stimulate new growth, resulting in a thicker, more resilient lawn that is better able to resist weeds, pests, and diseases.
When To Top Dress…
- Post-Drought Recovery: If a lawn has been through a dry spell or drought, recommending aeration and compost top dressing can help restore the soil’s moisture retention and revitalize grass growth.
- Poor Soil Quality: When a customer has compacted, clay-heavy, or nutrient-poor soil, aeration combined with compost can significantly improve soil structure, making it easier for grass to thrive.
- Thin or Patchy Lawns: If a customer’s lawn looks thin, patchy, or stressed, you can recommend this service to boost grass density by enriching the soil and encouraging healthier root development.
- After Pest or Disease Damage: If a customer’s lawn has suffered from pest infestations or diseases, compost can help regenerate the damaged areas by replenishing the soil with beneficial microbes and nutrients.
About The Compost We Use…
The compost we use consists of 90% wood shavings and 10% straw bedding, sourced primarily from horse stalls. Approximately 5% of the total material is manure, providing a balanced mix of organic matter and nutrients. The combination of wood shavings, straw, and manure makes this compost ideal for soil improvement, offering excellent moisture retention and promoting healthy plant growth. The high content of carbon from the wood shavings complements the nitrogen in the manure, resulting in a well-rounded compost for various gardening and landscaping needs.
