Why Your Lawn Needs a Last Fertilization Treatment and Some Maintenance Before Winter Sets In

winter-fertilizationKeep your lawn in tip top shape by preparing it properly for winter. As the temperature drops, the grass grows slowly. Your turf will react to the cooler weather and enter a period of dormancy. So before that happens in the last weeks of November apply the final lawn fertilization treatment of the year.

With Help, The Winter Is When Your Lawn Should Get Stronger

During the winter months your lawn will develop a stronger, healthier root system to store nutrients for the next growing season. So before the cold weather sets in is the perfect time to fertilize. Professional winterization formulas are different than fertilizers sold in garden stores or retail centers. Commercial winter fertilizers usually contain higher levels of potassium and lower levels of nitrogen winterization is not the same as a regular lawn treatment.

Winter Recommendations for Established Lawns

For established lawns, some turf experts recommend feeding with at least three parts nitrogen for every one part potassium to provide maximum green-up and overall health, with at least half of the nitrogen in a slow-release form. Many commercial fertilizers now contain little or no phosphorus because of pollution concerns. Phosphorus promotes a strong and healthy root system but it is not the primary ingredient. Potassium plays a role in regulation growth. However contrary to popular belief it is no longer thought to regulate winter hardiness. Research proves that it is more important to use nitrogen this time of year. The results seen in the spring with nitrogen enriched lawns during the winter will give you a lush green turf.

So since the most important nutrient for fall fertilization, as with earlier-season applications, still is NITROGEN. Nitrogen applied in the fall is the most important lawn fertilization of the year. Because of the widespread acceptance of the “winterizer” myth involving phosphorus and potassium, high-nitrogen lawn fertilizer may not be readily available at your local hardware or retail stores. Given that Nitrogen is the most important nutrient as a professional landscaping company we apply a treatment of 100% nitrogen to our customer’s lawns. Unlike the do it yourself mixes that you can purchase.

At A & A Landscaping we have experience applying winterizing turf treatments to your lawn. Schedule an appointment and next spring you will see firsthand the positive result of your nitrogen rich fertilization treatment process.
